We are delighted to welcome Cyril Coppini to the France Pavilion, one of the very few French performers of rakugo, the traditional Japanese art of comic storytelling. Originally from Nice, Cyril Coppini has lived in Japan since 1997 and studied under several rakugo masters in Tokyo and Osaka. He is the only French performer to deliver rakugo in Japanese, and also performs in French and English, bringing a multicultural dimension to this centuries-old art form.
Active as a rakugoka since 2011, Cyril has performed widely in Japan and across the Francophone world — in France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Canada — through shows, workshops, and educational programs. In 2023, he made headlines by performing at the legendary Olympia theatre in Paris to celebrate the release of the manga Akane-banashi.
He is also a well-known translator, having translated into French several manga including Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū (nominated for the 2022 Konishi Prize), Detective Conan, The Great Crossing, and Apprenti Criminel, as well as video games such as Danganronpa V3 and Dark Souls RPG.
Both the French and Japanese press praise his artistry for combining precise gestures, classic Japanese humor, and a subtle French flair. Cyril frequently appears on Japanese television (NHK World) and radio, sharing his passion for rakugo with diverse audiences.
