An immersive audio-visual journey exploring the invisible world of quantum physics

As part of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) 2025N’SO KYOTO is proud to present Quantum 2.0, a groundbreaking audio-visual performance that merges music, science, and technology into a singular sensory experience.

Quantum 2.0 will be performed over three days, from August 15 to 17, in the France Pavilion Event Space (4th floor) at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.

Performance Overview

Quantum 2.0 is an innovative work for solo percussion, electronics, augmented reality, and the Ceramophone—a one-of-a-kind ceramic musical instrument. Created by French composer and performer Yannick Paget, in close collaboration with theoretical physicist Koji Hashimoto, ceramic artist Toru Kurokawa, and visual artist Sagar Patel, the piece explores the subatomic oscillations of matter as governed by quantum mechanics.

After an initial version presented in 2022, this new iteration showcases significant technological and conceptual developments.

  • The Ceramophone, performed both physically and through Augmented Reality, creating a hybrid experience of matter and anti-matter at the heart of quantum principles.

  • The first-ever use of Virtual Reality technology in a live concert, blending physical and virtual instruments in real time. As the audience watches projected virtual instruments on screen, the boundary between the material and the immaterial is blurred, challenging perceptions of reality.

  • reactive visual composition by Sagar Patel, based on 3D modeling of Toru Kurokawa’s ceramic sculptures. The visuals dynamically respond to sound, allowing the audience to experience the disintegration and reformation of particles—an artistic exploration of matter itself.
